Rakitic: 'Ronaldo personally called me to join Juve'
- The Croatian midfielder confirms talks with Serie A champions in the summer.
- However, the Old Lady weren't ready to pay Barca €50m asking price so the deal didn't go through.
- The 31-year-old is unhappy with his situation.
- 'I need to play and not just enjoy walks around the city and the beach,' Rakitic explains.
- If nothing changes, Ivan is determined to sit down with the club again and discuss his situation.
Ivan Rakitic has all the reasons to be furious with Barcelona. After years of loyal service, the midfielder founds himself on the sidelines, abandoned and forgotten. And, as the midfielder reveals in the interview with Croatian media 24sata, the club didn't even allow him to leave when he wanted to do so in the summer.
Unable to complete the summer move, Rakitic went from a guaranteed starter to a benchwarmer at the Camp Nou. So far this season, the 31-year-old has played 166 minutes out of 720 available which makes him just fifth-used midfielder. Frenkie de Jong (629), Sergi Roberto (549), Sergio Busquets (484) and Arthur (380) are all ahead of the Croatian.
This obviously makes the Croatian wonder about his future, as he wants to play and not simply enjoy Barcelona city life and his huge salary.
"I don't know what will come now," Rakitic said. "It's tough because I want to play and not just be part of the team. I will do everything possible to change my situation. I have two years left on my deal and there's no better place to play than Barcelona, the best club in the world, but I need to play and not just enjoy walks around the city and the beach."
Ivan confirmed that he discussed his options with both club president Josep Maria Bartomeu and team captain Leo Messi.
"I spoke with people at the club everyone knew I had other options. I want to fight so that the team see me ready to deliver on the pitch. I want to thank the fans for the affection they showed me this weekend, but if nothing changed, we will have to sit down and talk about my situation again."
There is a huge doubt whether Rakitic lasts at Barcelona until the end of the 2019/2020 campaign. A bizarre rumour linked him with the sensational Qatar move. Previously, the Croatian was wanted by various Serie A and Premier League top clubs.
