Messi raves about Arthur-De Jong midfield duo but still misses Xavi & Iniesta
- Leo admits that there have been struggles after Xavi and Iniesta left the club.
- The Argentine, however, insists Barca have a great midfield now nonetheless.
In his interview to RAC1, Leo Messi has shed light on the void left behind once Xavi and Andres Iniesta left the club but also remembered to praise Barca's current midfield:
"It was obvious that there would be a void left by them. We knew that finding players like them was impossible. We had a midfield that made us have the ball 90% of the time and when we lost it we got it back in 5 seconds. We knew that they would be missed."
Still, the captain is happy with what Barca have got at the moment: "I think that we have great midfielders now, but Iniesta and Xavi were unique and that’s why the way we play has also changed. Everything went through them and not having them obviously changed things."
Arthur and Frenkie de Jong have been the heart of Barca's midfield this season. The Dutchman scored one goal and assisted once in 10 appearances this season, with the Brazilian scoring twice and providing three assists in seven games. It should also be noted that Arthur and Frenkie complete each other just like Xavi and Iniesta once did.
