James Pearce: Liverpool will try to sign Ben White or Ozan Kabak in January (reliability: 4 stars)

  • Both centre-backs were linked with a move to Anfield in the summer transfer window.
  • Pearce claims Reds are 'probably' looking at Kabak, but they might choose to promote someone from the academy.
  • He adds that White was 'frequently' mentioned at Anfield and is another option.

In an interview with Norwegian sports outlet TV2 Sports, the reliable reporter James Pearce said: "I will be surprised if they do not sign someone in January. I do not envisage a situation where they play the whole season with the squad they have now."

Pearce is talking about replacing Virgil van Dijk, who reportedly suffered a grade 3 ACL tear in the Merseyside derby. He continues: "There is a player [Ben White] who has been frequently mentioned at Anfield, and he did very well on loan to Leeds last year, so he is another option.

"Ozan Kabak is probably another player they are looking at and another good alternative. But maybe they also see in their own ranks. I know they have high hopes for the young boy Rhys Williams."

Kabak and White were both linked with the Reds during the summer but the club decided against buying a centre-back in the window.

However, Michael Edwards and Jurgen Klopp's may have no choice now as they need to sign a centre-back given that Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are now the only two senior players capable of playing in that position.

Tigers, true but he'd also be much more expensive. I can't see White being cheap either as he just signed a new contract, Kabak is the likeliest option.

Carlos, he has just signed up to a new contract so he would be a huge expense. Good player though Upamecano for me 🤔

Very true. Their loss is our huge gain. He is already a very good player who can step up further with the calibre of players, management and European tournaments surrounding him, no disrespect to Wolves

both are good players I'd be happy with either of them but to promote from within our own ranks would be risky because of their age and lack of experience

I don't know if it was our manager's decision not to sign lovren's replacement.
