What the Reds should do if they fail to sign a goalkeeper
footballfancast's Danielle Joynson believes Danny Ward deserves a chance
"From the moment when Karius made two howlers in the Reds’ Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in May, doubts arose over his long-term position at Anfield. Liverpool have been linked to numerous shot-stoppers over the last couple of months, but at the moment, Karius remains as number one.
"If some fans were getting used to the idea that the German will remain first choice for the upcoming season, they may have swiftly changed their minds following the midweek action. During a pre-season friendly against Tranmere Rovers, Karius fumbled a simple save, which led to a goal for the lower-league side, who scored twice in a 3-2 loss.
"It seems, though, that Liverpool’s hunt for a new shot-stopper is struggling, so perhaps they need to rethink their plan. There is no doubt that Liverpool need a world-class stopper to compete with their rivals.
"No club won a league title without a top-level player in between the sticks, but if the Reds fail to land a big name, they should promote from within for the time being. Ward has been at the club 2012, but he has struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular.
"In recent seasons, though, the 25-year-old has proven that he can cut it at the top level having been first choice for Wales at Euro 2016, in which they reached the semi-finals. Ward was also a crucial part of Huddersfield Town’s promotion to the Premier League while on loan during the 2016-17 season.
"If Klopp cannot bring in his top target, then he should give Ward a chance to grab the spot."
