Opinion: Alisson signed, but we have now another keeper dilemma
Ian Doyle opines as Danny Ward opted to leave the club LFC could be short of a decent backup option for Alisson, with both Mignolet and Karius eyeing exit.
"Danny Ward's spell as Liverpool first-choice goalkeeper - Jurgen Klopp having opted to give the Welshman a chance ahead of the suffering Loris Karius - lasted less than a week and ended with the precise total of zero appearances.
"The £65million arrival of Alisson Becker from Roma saw to that, the Reds hoping the Brazilian provides bang for his buck as they seek to address an increasingly troublesome shortcoming in a side otherwise littered with leading talent. But in doing so, Alisson has handed Liverpool with a goalkeeping problem of another sort.
"You can never have too big a squad. You can, though, seemingly have too many goalkeepers, a surfeit of options offering potential danger in such a specialist role. Ward saw what was coming, and within days had opted to depart in a £12.5million move to Leicester City. Remaining, however, are the two men who have spent the previous two years scrapping it out to be first choice keeper. And neither now seemingly wants to be at Anfield.
"Both Kamil Grabara and Caoimhin Kelleher have done well when called upon this pre-season, but they are untried youngsters. Being potential third choice would be the next logical step in their development. Becoming direct understudy to Alisson, though, is surely too much, too soon.
"Liverpool would realistically have to bring in more experienced backup for the Brazilian should Karius and Mignolet leave, and that in itself prompts another issue. Who would be happy to spend most of their time on the bench yet be capable enough of stepping in?
"Then there is another complication. While the transfer window for Premier League clubs to buy players closes next Thursday, clubs from overseas can conclude deals until the end of the month. If Karius and Mignolet are to both go, they'd have to do so in the next seven days so Klopp and his recruitment team can target a replacement."
