Klopp & van Dijk win December Premier League awards
- Virgil van Dijk has been named Premier League Player of the Month for December.
- Jurgen Klopp has received the correspondent Manager of the Month award.
- Liverpool collect both for one month for the first time since 2014, when Brandon Rodgers, Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez shared the two prizes.
As the Premier League have announced, Jurgen Klopp and Virgil van Dijk have been named the Premier League's Manager and Player of the Month for December. The duo was granted their prizes at Melwood on Friday.
The accolades seem fully deserved as Liverpool won all of their seven Premier League encounters last month, outscoring their opponents 22 to three. The Reds also secured the top spot of the competition's table with 7 points clear from the closest rivals.
Individually, van Dijk featured in each of the seven games, helped the team to get four clean sheets and, most remarkably, scored an incredible and crucial effort against Wolverhampton which also was the Dutchman's first Premier League goal for the Reds. Virgil is also the first defender to be honoured the award since Jan Vertonghen in March 2013.
The centre-back left behind teammate Mohamed Salah, Felipe Anderson (West Ham United), Eden Hazard (Chelsea), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United) and Son Heung-min (Tottenham Hotspur).
Klopp, in his turn, finished above Nuno Espirito Santo (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Manuel Pellegrini (West Ham United), Mauricio Pochettino (Tottenham Hotspur) and Maurizio Sarri (Chelsea) to the accolade.
This season seems special indeed. The German specialist was last named the Manager of the Month back in September 2016. Moreover, this occasion is the first one when both monthly accolades go to Liverpool since March 2014 when Brendan Rodgers got the manager's prize, while Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard shared the player's award.
