Merson urges Liverpool to lose in the Champions League
- Ex-Gunner believes Liverpool don't have a squad deep enough to win the Champions League.
- He urges Liverpool to abandon the European campaign and concentrate on the Prem.
- Injuries to the likes of Salah, Firmino and van Dijk could be critical, Merson claims.
Ex-Gunner and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes Liverpool should lose in the Champions League and concentrate solely on the Premier League title race.
Speaking on Sky Sports' The Debate, Merson claimed Liverpool squad is not deep enough to compete in two campaigns and if Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino or Virgil van Dijk get injured it would be a blow equivalent to Spurs loss of Harry Kane.
"I would get out of the Champions League as soon as possible because they are not good enough to win the double. They haven’t got the squad," Merson said. "If Salah, Firmino or Van Dijk got injured, wow, that is the equivalent of Harry Kane getting injured for Tottenham.
I don’t know if it’s just me but every time I watch Paul Merson on Sky Sports, it literally feels like he’s just come from drinking his ass off, straight into the studio.— Medium Draco (@papuccino18) January 22, 2019
"I just hope the players understand that 29 years without the title is a long time and they would be legends if they win it. Legends. This would be history.
"But I would be shocked if they won the double. Shocked."
It's not the first time Paul Merson urges Liverpool to lose. He was the one to claim the Reds should abandon domestic cup tournaments. But speaking of the Champions League, it's very likely that Jurgen Klopp and Co would love to go all the way to the final and hopefully do better in it than it was last season.
