Huge CL change that might affect Liverpool
- Champions League could be expanded to 40 or even 48 teams.
- An expansion will mean there'll be more groups or more teams in one group.
- Champions of Switzerland, Netherlands and Greece will directly play at the group stage.
A new proposal currently submitted by lesser European clubs to UEFA will see one overbloated version of CL football as per Liverpool Echo.
A 40-team Champions League would include eight groups of five teams with the top two progressing to the knockout stage, while a 48 team expansion will see the competition start with eight groups of six teams.
As a result a host of lesser teams will begin their European campaign at the group stage level, without having to go through the tedious qualification process.
The domestic Champions of countries such as Netherlands, Greece and Switzerland would thus be the teams who'll benefit the most.
The changes would allegedly be introduced from 2024.
A meeting of UEFA, the ECA and the European leagues will take place in Nyon on September 11.
