3 United's youngsters on the brink of a first-team breakthrough
Marissa Thomas of the Mirror takes a look at three Man United youngsters who can break into Mourinho's first-team plans this season
"Included in Man United's pre-season tour after two La Liga loans spells, Pereira has justified his selection. He has clearly developed a lot thanks to his temporary spells away from Old Trafford and played more minutes than anyone else during the tour, proving that Mourinho has plenty of faith in him. Pereira was one of the few shining lights during an underwhelming tour as he started all five games in the US and scored an excellent free-kick against Liverpool. With Nemanja Matic set to miss the start of the season after undergoing surgery for an abdominal injury, Pereira could make his first-ever Premier League start against Leicester City next week Friday. Some might say it is long overdue."
"Fosu-Mensah went out on loan to Crystal Palace last season where he made 21 Premier League appearances and gained invaluable top-flight experience. The Netherlands international is a central defender but is versatile and could force his way into Mourinho's plans and provide a solution to his defensive woes. He has already made 21 appearances for United and made his debut against Arsenal in February 2016 under former manager Louis van Gaal. Fosu-Mensah is keen to stay at Old Trafford this season and show Mourinho that he is a better player after his loan spell. He was also part of Man United's US tour squad and came on as a substitute in three matches and played the full 90 minutes against Liverpool and Real Madrid."
"There is plenty of talk about this promising youngster. Gomes is at his best when playing as an attacking midfielder, but he also provides a goal threat from a No.10 role. He has set several records at Man United already. The talented prospect became the youngest ever recipient of the Jimmy Murphy Player of the Year award in May 2017. Just three days later, he was the youngest player since Duncan Edwards to appear for United's first team when he came off the bench late in the final-day win over Crystal Palace. This appearance also made Gomes the first player born in this Millennium to play in the Premier League. Mourinho took him on the club's US tour and he featured as a substitute on three occasions. He is also the cousin of former Manchester United winger and Euro 2016 winner Nani."
