No 9 or left winger? Rashford position debate absolute no-brainer for Mourinho
- Jose still can't see his ex-player bag multiple goals in a season.
- However, Rashford can be a great forward from the left side.
- In this regard, the 21-year-old is 'perfect' for Solskjaer.
- Mourinho considers Rashford overall experienced enough.
Marcus Rashford is still looking for his perfect role: for some, he's a striker, for others a left winger. Jose Mourinho gravitates towards the latter.
"I don't think he's a 9 that can play against a low block or that can be a target man," ex-United boss said of Rashford on Sky Sports. "I think he's a man of movement, who can attack space and then attack defenders with the ball at his feet. I don't think he's a pure 9, so it depends on the model of play. If Ole wants to play the way he played today I think Rashford is the perfect striker for him.
"He is young, but he's experienced. At 21 years old, he probably has more matches in the Premier League, in the World Cup, in the Euros, in the Champions League, in the Europa League, than some players at 24, 25. So, for me, the point is not his age, it's his qualities."
Mourinho sticks with his prediction about Rashford as the 21-year-old is portrayed anything but a goalscoring machine.
He added: "For me, he is potentially a very good player in some models of play, in some positions. But as a target man, as a No 9, I don't think he has the 30 goals that a top striker has.
"For me, he can get better and better and better playing the way he did today [vs Liverpool], playing from the left side, playing with a target man. But for him to be the target man in matches where Manchester United are dominant, playing against defensive teams, against low blocks, I think it's difficult for him."
When Mourinho was at United, he often used Rashford on either side as Romelu Lukaku was the man down the middle.
The Portuguese already said something similar when United smashed Chelsea in August. He believes high work rate and responsibility make Rashford a good wing forward.
