Spain government intends to ban betting short sponsorship, La Liga clubs set to lose almost €80m
  • The Spanish government is moving forward with draft legislation which intends to forbid all football clubs to have a betting company as their shirt sponsor from the next season, according to Diario AS.
  • Out of 20 La Liga clubs, only three (Valladolid, Villarreal and Real Sociedad) have no links with such firms, while eight sides, including Sevilla, Valencia and Mallorca, have them as their main sponsors.
  • As per the source, if the bill is passed, the clubs are set to lose around €80 million.
  • England faces the same issue: half of the Premier League clubs and 17 out of 24 Championship sides are sponsored by bookmakers.
  • Last week, BBC reported that a House of Lords committee report recommended accepting the same measures by 2023.
