World Cup winner Andre Schurrle announces shocking retirement at 29
  • Andre Schurrle has announced his surprising retirement from football aged just 29.
  • "The decision matured in me for a long time," he said in an interview with Der Spiegel before adding: "I don't need the applause anymore".
  • The German spent the 2019/20 season on loan at Spartak Moscow from Borussia Dortmund.
  • His contract with BVB was due to expire in 2021 but was cancelled on Wednesday.
  • The winger started his senior career at Mainz and had spells at Bayer Leverkusen, Chelsea and Wolfsburg before joining Dortmund in 2016. He also had a loan spell at Fulham before his move to Russia last summer.
  • Schurrle also made 57 appearances for Germany and helped the Mannschaft win the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
