Marseille explain why their players didn’t take the knee against Manchester City
After Marseille’s players opted against taking the knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement in the Champions League clash against Man City, the club’s spokesperson explained their actions to the Daily Mail: “The gesture is an American one and the current situation in France is really different than in the UK.
“You may find some individual players taking the knee but no global movement. It does not mean that people don't care or are reluctant, it is just another way to express our position.
“That's why our players decided to stand side by side, to show their support to the Manchester City players' action but in our own way.”
The Premier League has heavily shown its support for the Black Lives Matter campaign with each game seeing players sit down on one knee to showcase their solidarity. Not all leagues have continued with this tradition into the 2020/21 season and instead opted to show their support for the movement in their own manner.
