Former Chelsea defender William Gallas has launched a scathing attack on the club's decision to sign goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, claiming he lacks the quality to be the team's number one.

Gallas, who played for Chelsea from 2001 to 2006, believes Sanchez's error-prone performances are a result of his inadequate ability, rather than just bad luck.

"Unfortunately for Robert Sanchez, he makes some big mistakes, and he makes them too often," Gallas said.

The Frenchman also criticised Chelsea's sporting directors for signing Sanchez, who arrived at the club in a £25m deal from Brighton in 2023.

"It's easy to blame the player, but I think Chelsea fans have to blame the sporting director. They have to blame the people who brought him in," Gallas said.

Gallas' comments come after Sanchez was dropped by Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca for Monday's win against West Ham, sparking speculation that he may have lost his place as the team's first-choice goalkeeper.
