In an extensive interview Didier Deschamps opened up about his succession plans. Although the French coach has announced his departure after the 2026 World Cup, he revisited the possibility of seeing Zinedine Zidane take charge of Les Bleus.

"Yes, of course, there is a lot of respect between us. We last met in the summer of 2023, and we must meet again next summer for the same reasons. Zizou is an excellent candidate – natural, and I would add, patient. After that, I don't know if he will be interested," the 56-year-old coach confided. He added, "I just said it. He is a very good candidate, natural. After that, it's his decision, and that of the president."

Deschamps' endorsement of this potential appointment is echoed by the FFF president, Phillipe Diallo. "He is one of the monuments of French and world football. He is the one who contributed to that first star on our shirt. I have a great deal of respect and admiration for one of the greatest players in football history," Diallo recently admitted.

When questioned on the matter in 2022, Zidane himself said, "I want it, of course. I hope to be one day. When? That does not depend on me. But I want to complete the circle with the French national team. I experienced that team as a player, and it is the most beautiful thing that has ever happened to me!"
