At the start of the season, Real Madrid budgeted that they would reach the Champions League quarter-final, according to Relevo.
Madrid were not expecting to slip into the playoff places in the Champions League. But defeats to AC Milan, Liverpool and Lille ensured that.
To make matters worse, Madrid were handed the hardest possible draw against Man City.
If Madrid doesn't reach the Champions League quarter-final, it would account for €40m in losses on the books of Florentino Perez.
Real Madrid earned upwards of €100m for winning the Champions League last season. €78-81m of that money was guaranteed.
Los Blancos have continued to earn big and top the money league for their performance in the Champions League.
