Merson: 'The era of Manchester City dominance is over'
Sky Sports expert Paul Merson has expressed confidence that the era of Manchester City's dominance in English football has come to an end.
This season has been challenging for City, who have already bid farewell to their hopes of defending the Premier League title and are now focusing on securing a top-4 finish. Merson believes that City will no longer dominate as they did before, citing Premier League Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations as one of the reasons.
"I am worried about Manchester City right now. They will never again have a squad like they did in the past couple of seasons," Merson said. "Their dynasty is over. They will not dominate English football as they did in the last four years or so.
"The reason for this is that they will never again have the same quality of squad as in recent years. Last season, Erling Haaland's backup was a World Cup winner, who left for £80 million.
"They had two great players, international team players, in every position. That will no longer happen.
"Don't get me wrong, they could win the league again. But they won't be getting 20 consecutive wins to get there. If they do win the league again, it will be in a tough battle.
"They won't dominate English football like before. FFP rules mean no team will be able to assemble a squad like they had. It was an incredible group of players," Merson told Sky Sports.
