Lothar Matthaus backs Niko Kovac after latest BVB defeat: 'He’s least to blame'

15 March, 21:35

Another loss for Borussia Dortmund against RB Leipzig on Bundesliga on Matchday 26 only deepens their woes. Qualifying for next season’s Champions League is under threat, and someone must take the fall.

Yet head coach Niko Kovac isn’t up for debate - his share of blame for this defeat is arguably the smallest.

Sky pundit Lothar Matthaus sided with Kovac right after the match: "These aren’t numbers a coach wants to see."

Matthaus explained clearly: "He’s the least to blame. You can’t coach what you’d like to see. For the second half, you could almost congratulate Kovac."

Now, Borussia Dortmund head into an international break. Their next Bundesliga matches are at home against Mainz on March 30, away at Freiburg on April 5, followed by the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Barcelona on April 9.
