Virgil van Dijk: 'That’s how football works - lose twice in five days and world falls apart'

Liverpool’s centre-back Virgil van Dijk has shared his thoughts after the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle in Carabao Cup final.

"We’ve got to turn things around. That’s how football works - lose twice in five days, and the world falls apart.

"Just two weeks ago, everything was bright and rosy. We crashed out of the Champions League, got knocked out of the FA Cup, and now we’ve lost this final. We’ve got nine games left, and I don’t think we need any extra motivation to try and see it through to the end. You’re fighting for the biggest prize, the one you’ve worked so hard for since the season kicked off.

"Nobody expected us to be in the running for the Premier League title. It’s the toughest trophy to win. There’s so much at stake. There are still plenty of positive moments and good things ahead. That’s what keeps us grinding day in, day out.

"Right now, everyone’s off to join their national teams, they’ll play there and, hopefully, come back in good shape. Then we’ll gear up for the home clash with Everton, which won’t be an easy one," Van Dijk said.
