Nagelsmann on Urbig’s development: 'Better to take risks than stay glued to the line'
Goalkeeper Jonas Urbig faced criticism after his mistake in the match against Union Berlin. Pundits questioned his decision to leave his goal, but Julian Nagelsmann has now come to the young goalkeeper’s defense.
The Germany head coach emphasised that such moments are part of a young keeper’s learning curve: "We can debate whether it was a mistake or not. When I watched the game, I thought he had to go there. He learns from these situations to be ready for really big matches. I’d rather have a goalkeeper who’s brave and tries to get to the ball than someone who just stays on the line and avoids mistakes - because that way, he’ll never become a great goalkeeper." Julian Nagelsmann said.
Nagelsmann called for more fairness in how Urbig is treated and took aim at the media coverage: "I’d hope we all deal with these mistakes fairly and don’t constantly pile on the kid. He’ll learn from these moments and get better."
