Real Madrid win legal battle against La Liga over CVC deal after major court decision
Real Madrid have won their legal battle against La Liga over the CVC sponsorship deal, which was agreed in 2021.
Los Blancos were one of the clubs who argued that the sponsorship was unruly and the Madrid provincial court has backed that.
However, La Liga have insisted that they will appeal this ruling from the court and that the CVC deal has not been impacted by it.
In an official statement, they stated: "In light of the ruling issued by the Provincial Court of Madrid, which dismissed the appeal filed against the ruling annulling the Assembly agreement of August 12, 2021, regarding the approval of the Term Sheet for the CVC Project, denounced by Real Madrid CF and Athletic Club, LALIGA, with the utmost respect for judicial decisions, wishes to clarify the following:
1. The Court finds that the call for LALIGA's Extraordinary General Assembly of August 12, 2021, was properly executed, and that the defects alleged by the plaintiffs were not significant enough to affect the validity of the agreement. Furthermore, with regard to the information provided by LALIGA, the Court concludes that the information made available was complete and sufficient.
However, despite upholding these arguments, the Court dismissed the appeal, considering that a substantial alteration of the agenda, relating to the section on the non-affectation of Operation CVC to non-adhering clubs and SADs, constitutes a violation of the right to information, insofar as there was no prior examination or study.
"2. However, the judgment in no way affects the validity and maintenance of the LALIGA Impulso Project with CVC approved at the Assembly of December 10, 2021. In this sense, the substantive issues relating to the Impulso project have been submitted to judicial debate in another subsequent procedure in which the Assembly's agreement of December 10, 2021 was challenged, with a judgment being issued in February 2024 dismissing the plaintiffs' claims.
The ruling that is not final will be appealed in cassation before the Supreme Court."
The CVC deal, which was implemented in 2021, saw La Liga and their clubs receive almost €2m from private equity firm CVC - who were promised 8.2% of the league's income for the next 50 years.
