Atletico Madrid face Baku in battle for 2027 Champions League final
As reports that Atletico Madrid continue their efforts to host the 2027 Champions League final at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. However, Spanish Football Federation president Rafael Louzan made a mistake by assuming it was guaranteed, as nothing is certain yet. Atletico are still submitting the necessary documentation and have until the end of March. They aim to be respectful of Baku and Azerbaijan in this process.
The Metropolitano is competing with Baku's Olympic Stadium to host the final after San Siro in Milan dropped out. While Atletico are considered the favourite, no one in the club is taking anything for granted. The final decision will be made at the UEFA Congress on April 3 in Belgrade, with the official announcement during the Europa League final in Bilbao on May 21.
Atletico's Metropolitano stadium previously hosted the 2019 final between Liverpool and Tottenham, earning praise from UEFA. The club are now stronger socially and economically, and while they feel capable of hosting important matches, they continue to follow all rules and protocols.
There has been some fan backlash over Atletico’s decision not to protest their Champions League match against Real Madrid, with some speculating that UEFA will reward them with the 2027 final. However, nothing has been confirmed, and both Baku and Madrid are still in the running. Louzan’s comments have put Atletico president Enrique Cerezo in a difficult position.
