Diego Simeone on Griezmann's situation: 'It's normal to play less as you get older'

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has addressed the media on Friday ahead of his team’s match against UD Las Palmas on Saturday, discussing a variety of topics, including the role of club legends, his squad's current situation, and the return of Angel Correa. However, one of the key moments in his press conference came when he was asked about Antoine Griezmann and his recent performances.

Simeone was asked about the current situation of the French forward, whose performances have been under scrutiny from certain sections of the Atletico Madrid fanbase. The coach acknowledged that it’s normal for players to experience a dip in form as they age, drawing from his own experience.

“It’s normal to play less as you get older and lose the rhythm, speed, quality, or influence you once had in the team. Coaches live in the present, and teams live in the present,” Simeone said. He continued by noting that this process is something every player, even legends, will eventually face.

“You don’t understand it at the time. The player always wants to play, no matter if they’re 36, 35, 28, or 16 years old,” Simeone added, reflecting on the difficult adjustment of accepting a reduced role. His comments suggest that Griezmann’s current situation is part of a natural progression for any player, even for one as highly regarded as the French forward.

Alongside his comments on Griezmann, Simeone also praised the return of Angel Correa, who will be available for selection after serving a four-match suspension. "We’ve missed him," Simeone admitted. "He’s a game-changer when he comes on, and now he’s training well and showing the same commitment to Atletico Madrid as always."

Looking ahead to the clash with Las Palmas, Simeone acknowledged the challenges they will face and praised their coach, Diego Martinez. “They’ve competed well in every match, regardless of the result, and that’s something we have to respect,” he concluded.

Simeone’s comments suggest a balanced approach as Atletico head into the final stretch of the season, with competition heating up in various areas of the squad, including Griezmann’s position in the team.
