Jerome Rothen slams Mbappe: ‘He is a resounding failure’

Former PSG winger Jerome Rothen has criticised Kylian Mbappe following Real Madrid’s Champions League exit at the hands of Arsenal.

Madrid, viewed by many as favourites, overcame Manchester City and Atletico Madrid before suffering a 5-1 aggregate defeat to the Gunners. Mbappe had a goal disallowed in the second leg but was largely ineffective and substituted late on.

Despite being Real’s top scorer this season, Rothen said that Mbappe’s move from PSG has backfired.

“People are talking about Kylian Mbappe,” he said. “He arrived at his dream club with the ambition of winning every trophy, including the Champions League, and also of being among the best players in the world and winning the Ballon d'Or. Collectively and individually, he is a failure. He will not win the Ballon d'Or this year. He is a resounding failure.”

Rothen continued: “At the start of the season, mitigating factors were found. He could have had time to adapt, but when you're Mbappe, the adaptation time is shorter. He scored a lot of goals, but in the game he's catastrophic.”

Mbappe left PSG aiming for European glory, but while Madrid are out, Luis Enrique’s side are now in the semi-finals and set to face Arsenal later this month.
