Not only Gyokeres: Sporting may lose another key Scandinavian player - Hjulmand

Morten Hjulmand, the 25-year-old midfielder, is considered untouchable at Sporting. However, it’s highly likely that he will have to be let go this summer.

Signed in the summer of 2023 for €18 million — at the time the second-largest signing in Sporting's history after Viktor Gyokeres — Hjulmand has exceeded all expectations. He was an undisputed starter in the 2023/2024 season, playing 49 matches (43 in the starting eleven), scoring four goals, and providing four assists.

This season, he earned the captain’s armband. Despite an injury in 2025, Hjulmand still managed 43 appearances, three goals, and two assists. His performances have attracted interest from top European clubs.

His impressive play earned him a call-up to the Danish national team and a spot in the European Championship squad, where he stood out, even scoring in a group stage draw against England, further boosting his profile. Sporting has already received inquiries from English and Spanish clubs. It’s very likely that Sporting will need to enter the transfer market to find a replacement.

The club’s management would prefer not to lose Hjulmand, especially with Gyokeres likely to leave as well. Losing both key players would significantly weaken the team for the new season. Hjulmand has a release clause set at €80 million.
