Xabi Alonso confirms Tah's departure: coach bids farewell to defender with big words
After ten years in Bayer Leverkusen's jersey, Jonathan Tah will leave the club this summer. Coach Xabi Alonso confirmed the news to Bild on Friday — even before the club officially announced it.
"There is clarity. We can talk about his future," Alonso said, praising the defender highly: "Since the start of the season, he was very clear in discussions. His attitude, his quality, his professionalism — he was perhaps the most consistent player in our squad this season. He played excellently. And he deserves to decide about his future."
Tah had already considered a move last summer, including a possible transfer to Bayern Munich, but it ultimately fell through. Now his departure is certain — without extending his expiring contract.
It remains unclear where Tah will move next. FC Barcelona have long been considered a potential destination, but the Catalan club’s financial troubles have apparently put the deal at risk. Tah’s representatives are demanding a guarantee for a professional registration, which Barcelona has not been able to provide so far.
