'There are rules, and they apply to Kane too': Matthaus doesn't understand criticism of Dankert

In the away game against RB Leipzig on Matchday 32 of the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich had to play without Harry Kane, who received his fifth yellow card of the season during the 3–0 home win against Mainz on Saturday.

Kane criticised referee Bastian Dankert personally after receiving the yellow for delaying the restart of play: “Unfortunately, sometimes people come to the Allianz Arena trying to make a name for themselves. He could hardly wait to pull out the yellow card.”

Former pro Lothar Matthaus finds Kane's complaints unjustified: “His criticism of referee Bastian Dankert was unwarranted in my opinion. There are rules, and they apply to Kane too,” he wrote in his Sky column.

The 64-year-old added: “One could argue that Dankert could have shown more tact, but there have been yellow cards or even yellow-reds for time-wasting in other games as well, such as in Bremen’s win over Mainz at the end of January.”

Matthaus also showed little sympathy for Kane’s criticism of the Bundesliga’s yellow card rule: “Kane said the rule suspending a player after five yellow cards is crazy and pointed out that in England, yellow cards are reset after the first half of the season. But Kane plays in Germany, and we have different and bigger issues in the Bundesliga than adopting a system from England. We can be satisfied with our system, and we also need to protect our referees.”
