'He's faced with this reality' - Van der Gaag voices sympathy for Amorim
Mitchell van der Gaag, former assistant to Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, has expressed his sympathy for current coach Ruben Amorim, citing the challenging circumstances at Old Trafford.
Van der Gaag, who was dismissed in July after Ten Hag's staff overhaul, believes Amorim's rough start is unsurprising given the significant changes happening outside the club.
"There's a lot going on around the club," Van der Gaag told A Bola. "A top coach arrives, but he's faced with this reality, he has no control over it, and he needs to work."
Van der Gaag noted that a coach needs victories to implement their ideas and gain player buy-in, making Amorim's mid-season arrival particularly tough.
United currently sit 16th in the Premier League, winless in their last six matches, but still have a chance to end the season on a high note with the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur on May 21.
Van der Gaag hopes Amorim gets the time to make an impact despite the club's ongoing restructuring and cost-cutting measures.
