Xabi Alonso could set German league record with 34th consecutive away game unbeaten in his final match

Bayer Leverkusen will attempt to set a new German league record when they face Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga finale on Saturday, aiming for their 34th consecutive away game without defeat. The current record of 33 away league games unbeaten is held by Bayern Munich.

The match also marks the final game in charge for departing coach Xabi Alonso, who is preparing to leave the club after two and a half years. According to reports, Alonso is close to agreeing a deal to take over as Real Madrid manager this summer.

Leverkusen have enjoyed an exceptional run under Alonso, securing an undefeated domestic league and Cup double last season. This campaign, they have maintained their unbeaten streak on the road, equalling Bayern’s record of 33 away league games without a loss.

With Bayern already crowned champions and Leverkusen set to finish second, the team now has the chance to rewrite history by completing two full seasons unbeaten away from home in the league.

When asked about the potential record at a press conference on Friday, Alonso said: “Yes, in terms of football goals, for sure. It is very, very meaningful if we reach it.

“To have two whole seasons without an away defeat is special but it is not going to be easy. But we want to try until the last day.

“We had enough time to say farewell so we want to end with a good feeling for all.”
