'Clear red.' Ex-referee Iturralde on Bade’s foul on Mbappe
A former referee has explained why Sevilla defender Loic Bade was sent off in the match against Real Madrid.
In the 12th minute, Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe was about to go one-on-one with the goalkeeper when Bade committed a last-man foul. Referee Mateo Busquets consulted VAR to check for a possible offside and then showed Bade a straight red card.
“Clear red. If a foul is confirmed in that kind of situation, it’s an obvious sending-off.
VAR checked whether there was an offside, whether it was a foul, and whether the goalkeeper was close enough to influence the play,” said former referee Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez on Carrusel Deportivo on Cadena SER.
In the 48th minute, the referee issued a second red card to a Sevilla player—Isaac Romero—for a studs-up foul on Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.
