Ajax eye Erik ten Hag as top choice after Farioli’s exit - reports

Ajax are actively pursuing Erik ten Hag to return as head coach after Francesco Farioli’s abrupt departure, following a dramatic Eredivisie title collapse, according to Florian Plettenberg.

Farioli, who led Ajax to second place, resigned due to clashing visions with management. Ten Hag, who previously guided Ajax to a 2019 Champions League semi-final, is a leading candidate, with Paul Simonis also in contention.

Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen have Ten Hag on their shortlist to replace Xabi Alonso, who is set to join Real Madrid. Ajax’s technical director Alex Kroes called Farioli’s exit disappointing but emphasised the club’s Champions League qualification.

A decision is expected soon as Ajax aim to rebuild for the 2025/26 season.
