Liverpool 'left in battle' with Bayern for Florian Wirtz

Liverpool have emerged as the most realistic Premier League option for Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz after Manchester City pulled out of the transfer race.

City's decision is understood to be due to the escalating fees involved, with estimates suggesting a deal could reach £250 million, including transfer fee, salaries, bonuses, and agents' fees.

This figure would shatter Liverpool's transfer record of £85 million, set when they signed Darwin Nunez three years ago.

Despite the potential cost, Liverpool have registered their interest and asked to be kept informed of developments. If given hope of securing a deal, they are prepared to move.

Wirtz, 22, has been a standout player for Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso, scoring 10 Bundesliga goals and helping his side finish second in the table.

Liverpool may see an opportunity to sign Wirtz after already picking up his teammate, Jeremie Frimpong.

The transfer battle now appears to be between Liverpool and Bayern Munich, with Wirtz due for further talks with the German champions.

Liverpool's Arne Slot might be buoyed by City's withdrawal, potentially giving the Reds an edge in the pursuit of the talented young midfielder.
