Vinicius gives evidence in court about racist attack: 'I feared for my life and my family's safety after seeing the doll'
Vinicius Junior has spoken in court about the racist attack involving a hanging doll dressed in his shirt. He said he felt afraid and questioned whether he and his family were in danger.
The Real Madrid forward gave evidence via video call from Valdebebas, the club’s training ground. He appeared as a victim in the trial of four men accused of hanging the doll from a bridge near the training ground, next to a banner that read “Madrid hate Real”.
“It was a very sad day for me,” Vinicius told the court. “They hung that doll because of me and because of my skin colour. I didn’t know what it meant, if I or my family were in danger,” he said.
His testimony has been recorded in advance because he will be in the United States with Real Madrid for the Club World Cup when the main hearing starts on 16 June.
