Eric Garcia played through tonsillitis against Villarreal – reports
Barcelona defender Eric Garcia featured against Villarreal despite suffering from tonsillitis, according to El Pais journalist Juan Irigoyen.
In his weekly column ‘Oigo Voces’, Irigoyen revealed that Garcia had been battling illness ahead of the match and was initially expected to be replaced by youngster Hector Fort. However, after a medical consultation, the decision was made for Garcia to play.
“Eric had tonsillitis. Hector Fort was supposed to replace him, but the doctor insisted. Eric Garcia ended up playing,” Irigoyen stated during an appearance on SER Catalunya’s ‘Que t’hi Jugues’.
The revelation highlights Garcia’s commitment, as the 24-year-old centre-back pushed through discomfort to support the team during a demanding period of the season.
Garcia, who has spent this campaign on loan at Girona, has made a strong impression and remains under close watch by Barcelona ahead of next season. The decision on his future will be part of the wider evaluation taking place as new manager Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco prepare for the 2025/26 campaign.
