Former Man United academy coach David Hughes appointed Newport County manager

Newport County have announced the appointment of David Hughes, formerly an academy coach at Manchester United, as their new manager on a two-year contract.

Joining Hughes at Newport will be assistant manager Wayne Hatswell and head of goalkeeping Lee Kendall, both bringing valuable experience to the coaching staff.

With a strong background in youth development and elite performance, Hughes’ coaching career also includes senior academy roles at Cardiff City and Southampton, along with managing the Wales Under-17 national team for four years.

As a former professional player, Hughes began his career at Aston Villa, making seven Premier League appearances before a career-ending injury forced him to retire at 26. He also had spells at Carlisle United, Shrewsbury Town, and Cardiff City, and earned international caps for Wales.

His extensive coaching experience spans roles at clubs including Shrewsbury, Watford, Aston Villa, Southampton, and the Welsh national setup, equipping him with deep knowledge of player development at all levels of the game.
