Abdul Aziz Issah set to leave Barcelona after mysterious loan spell - reports

SPORT reports that Abdul Aziz Issah’s brief and puzzling time at FC Barcelona is coming to an end, with the club deciding not to trigger the option to buy the Ghanaian midfielder. The 19-year-old, who joined on loan from Dreams FC last September, is expected to leave this summer and continue his career elsewhere in Europe.

Aziz arrived alongside fellow countryman David Oduro as part of Barcelona’s growing investment in African talent. While Oduro signed a permanent deal until 2027, Aziz joined on a season-long loan, with the Catalan club paying a fee for his services. A promising attacking midfielder capable of playing centrally or on the wing, Aziz was viewed as a potential gem.

Shortly after landing in Barcelona, both players were called to train with the first team under Hansi Flick ahead of a league match against Girona. The session, held on 14 September, saw Aziz rub shoulders with the likes of Lewandowski, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal – a surreal experience for the teenager who had just arrived in Europe.

However, that early excitement never translated into real opportunities. Aziz featured for just 26 minutes in total – 16 against Real Sociedad B in early November and another 10 versus Nastic. Since then, he hasn’t made another appearance for the B team, with both Albert Sanchez and current coach Sergi Mila opting to leave him out, despite injuries and a lack of squad depth.

In recent weeks, Aziz represented Ghana in the U20 Africa Cup of Nations, where he impressed by winning MVP in one match and helping his side reach the quarter-finals. Upon returning to Barcelona, he resumed training with the B team, but the club have no plans to retain him.

Aziz Issah will now finish his loan spell with Barcelona Atletic this weekend, leaving behind more questions than answers. A highly rated prospect when he arrived, his time in Catalonia will be remembered as a missed opportunity and a mystery yet to be solved.
