Leganes relegated to Segunda after final day drama
CD Leganes have been relegated to La Liga Hypermotion following a dramatic final day of the 2024–25 season. Despite securing a 3–0 victory over Real Valladolid at Butarque, the Madrid-based club's fate was sealed by RCD Espanyol's 2–0 win against UD Las Palmas.
The pepineros entered the final matchday in a precarious position, needing a win and hoping for Espanyol to drop points. Their commanding performance against Valladolid, with goals from Juan Cruz and others, appeared to ensure survival. However, Espanyol's decisive victory, including a controversial penalty converted by Javi Puado, condemned Leganes to the drop.
This marks a swift return to the second tier for Leganes, who had been promoted just the previous season.
The relegation has triggered significant changes within the club. Several key players, including Renato Tapia, Marko Dmitrovic, Matija Nastasic, Munir El Haddadi, and Oscar Rodriguez, have release clauses in their contracts that allow them to depart following the drop.
With only 11 players contracted for the upcoming season, Leganes face a major rebuilding effort. Sporting director Andres Pardo will oversee the team's reconstruction, following the departure of Txema Indias.
The club's immediate focus will be on restructuring the squad and preparing for life in the second division, aiming to secure a swift return to La Liga.
