Stefan Effenberg: Ozil should be thrown out of the German team
• Former Germany international Stefan Effenberg believes Ozil and other players who took photos with Erdogan should be banned
• Effenberg himself was excluded from the national team in 1994 after making an obscene gesture towards the supporters
"If you bet on certain values, as the DFB repeatedly conveys, then the decision can only be made by throwing the two players out."
The story began when Ozil, Gundogan and Everton striker Cenk Tosun got in trouble as Turkey’s ruling AK Parti (Justice and Development Party) published an image of them with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
All three of them handed Erdogan signed shirts from their respective clubs and posed for photos.
For those who don't know: Erdogan is the President of Turkey since 2014 and his regime has been condemned by human rights campaigners. Arresting of journalists and opposition politicians caused the fury of certain political forces who disagree with his methods.
