Jasper Cillessen: 'De Ligt and De Jong would be delighted to join Barca'
- Diario Sport talked at length with Barca second goalkeeper, Jasper Cillessen
- They discussed Barca transfer targets and Cillessen's Holland teammates, Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong
Cillessen plays together with Barca main transfer targets Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong at the national team, so naturally, Sport was eager to know more about them from a 'close source'.
On if Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong are really THAT talented:
"With De Jong, I didn't play together at Ajax, but I did play wit De Ligt for a few weeks, because he came up to the first team in the summer of 2016. I was able to work with him that preseason, before coming to Barça. He's a player with a lot of quality and is only 19."
On if de Ligt is ready for Barca:
"He's getting big game experience with Ajax and Holland. He's 19 years old, he's physical, strong, mentally strong, especially if you see the game against Germany. In the first half he didn't go so well, but he recovered in the second half, he was excellent in the second half. at 19 years old. He was also excellent against Bayern Munich in the Champions League for Ajax.
"I spoke with him about it [Barcelona], he has the level, but he's still 19 years old.… I don't know because Overmars is in charge at Ajax, so I don't know what he wants [to let him leave]. I also read he's not going anywhere [in January]."
On what de Ligt says about Barcelona:
"That it's a great club. Everyone says it."
On what type of player de Jong is and if he is similar to Sergio Busquets:
"He can do both [midfield roles]. With the national team he plays more like Busquets. But Busquets is on another level at the moment. I think he's undervalued by most people. We spoke about him with the national team and I said when he's not there you miss him, that's the great quality of Busquets."
On if de Jong could grow into Busquets replacement:
"Yes, it's an interesting option, but it's the same as with De Ligt: it depends on Overmars's opinion."
On if de Jong would like to join Barcelona:
"Yes, everybody in the national team would like to play for Barcelona because its one of the best teams in the world."
According to Sport, Barcelona are closely monitoring the progress of the multi-talented Ajax duo of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong. The best potential scenario is that the Catalans manage to scoop the double deal, however, this isn't going to be easy as the youngsters have grabbed interest from other top clubs, including Qatar-funded Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.
