Barca loanee Cucurella expected to join Eibar on a permanent deal
- The 20-year-old was originally considered the best coverup for Jordi Alba.
- However, he was eventually sent to fellow La Liga side Eibar on a loan deal.
- Now the Basques' official confirms the club's intention to activate Cucurella's buyout clause which is worth 5 million euros.
- The left-back has already provided two assists in the league and helped demolish Real Madrid earlier this season.
Barcelona host the Basque side Eibar on Sunday, 13 January; kick-off is at 18:30 CET. It is going to be a special fixture for the Catalans' promising defender Marc Cucurella who joined the Basques on a loan deal this summer.
Originally, the starlet was expected to replace Barca's only senior left-back Jordi Alba, however, the pre-season games proved that he was a bit behind fellow starlet, Juan Miranda. That's why Cucurella was sent to Eibar on a loan deal.
The contract allows the Basques to sign Cucurella on a permanent basis. Prior to the La Liga clash, Eibar's sporting director Fran Garagaza gives an interview to Catalunya Radio in which he all but confirms the club's intention to purchase the youngster from Barca.
He says: "Seeing the performance of the boy and his quality, if they asked me now what I would do, I would tell you that we would pay the option to buy. It is far less than 5 million euros."
He continues: "His performance has surprised us. We followed him, we watch the youth team games a lot. We didn't sign him thinking he would be a winger but a full-back to battle with Cote. I want to thank Barca and above all Ramon Planes for his help in this deal, which happened two days before the market closed."
Cucurella particularly impressed in the famous 3-0 home demolition of Real Madrid as he contributed to all three goals Eibar scored past the 13-time Champions League winners. In total, the 20-year-old has made 12 La Liga appearances and provided two assists.
