- All major European leagues are currently on hold because of coronavirus.
- UEFA have issued a 'strong recommendation' to member nations to see through their leagues and cups.
- However, they concede it might not be possible in some countries.
- In which case clubs for next season's European competitions should be picked based on 'objective, transparent and non-discriminatory principles'.
UEFA are hoping domestic league can be played to the end and have issued a 'strong recommendation' to do so, however, they are weighing up the possibility some countries won't be able to do that.
In that case, the governing body would expect clubs to be selected for participation in their tournaments based on sporting merit, based on 'objective, transparent and non-discriminatory principles'.
"If a domestic competition is prematurely terminated for legitimate reasons in accordance with the above conditions, UEFA would require the National Association concerned to select clubs for the Uefa club competitions 2020/21 based on sporting merit in the 2019/20 domestic competitions," their statement claimed.
"The procedure for selecting clubs should be based on objective, transparent and non-discriminatory principles. National Associations and Leagues, should otherwise have the ability to decide the final positions in their domestic competitions, having regard to the specific circumstances of each competition;
"The final determination of eligible places for the UEFA club competitions should be confirmed by the relevant competent bodies at domestic level."
For now, there are two dominating suggestions of what that might mean. First would see domestic leagues go down the coefficient route. This will benefit Arsenal, whose coefficient is fourth (after Man City, Liverpool and Man United) - meaning the Gunners will be offered a spot in the Champions League.
The second is less hunky-dory. It's a straightforward suggestion that the current league standing will decide who plays where. As Arsenal are 9th, Mikel Arteta's side would miss out on both the Champions League and Europa League places in this scenario.
No points for those who guess which way we hope this will pan out.
