ESPN: Premier League players do not want to play during coronavirus pandemic

PL's plan to kick off in early June can be met with resistance from players as they are unwilling to play a contact sport during the pandemic, ESPN report.

One source at a Premier League club told ESPN: "A lot of players are very uncomfortable with coming back.

"The only way the league takes this seriously is when someone at a club dies. We will look back on this time with sadness in the future."

PL are yet to announce a protocol which will guard a return to training, unlike the Spanish La Liga, the German Bundesliga and Italian Serie A, although some clubs have opened their training grounds for individual workouts, Arsenal among those.

UK's culture secretary Oliver Dowden has earlier confirmed the Government is in talks to get football up and running as soon as possible, while UEFA have slapped a May 25 deadline for PL on all return proposals.

Many players, however, are less than happy about football returning especially while social distancing measures have not been relaxed elsewhere. Some also have small kids and pregnant wives to worry about, which contributes to their reservations.

3 major countries have already cancelled their seasons: France, Belgium and the Netherlands. La Liga's president Xavier Tebas warned that 'professional football can disappear unless it's restarted', while the German Bundesliga and the Italian Serie A are nearing a return to action.
