Brentford turn down Arsenal's £10m offer for goalkeeper David Raya (reliability: 4 stars)

Just when it looked like Arsenal would stop with Runar Alex Runarsson from Dijon as their backup goalie this season, The Telegraph threw a spanner in the works by claiming the Gunners bid for Brentford's David Raya.

The £10m offer was turned down by the Championship side who made it clear they do not want to sell their shot-stopper this window. They would be more inclined to deal if the purchase agreement had loan-back clause for this season - but that's not what Arsenal want.

Mikel Arteta reportedly wants a goalie to put sufficient pressure on Bernd Leno as his number 1, following Emi Martinez's transfer to Aston Villa, which is something Runarsson will be unable to do.

To be fair, while the report itself looks credible and we do know Arsenal are interested in Raya because of his ability and link with our goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana, the £10m bid does raise our eyebrows.

We are getting close to £20m for Emi, spending half of that on bringing in another goalie in makes little sense. Arsenal might have as well kept the Argentine if they want someone to keep the pressure on Leno.

Furthermore, being a goalkeeper aiming for first-team action kinda defeats the point of claiming that Leno is our undisputed number 1. There's generally a big gulf in quality between the keepers in Premier League sides, selling Martinez indicated we were keeping up with the rest.
