OFFICIAL: Arsenal sign Runarsson on a 4-year deal

Arsenal have completed the signing of Alex Runar Runarsson, it has been confirmed by the club's website.

The keeper joins from the Ligue 1 side Dijon for a reported €1.5m fee. The Iceland international will likely deputise for Bernd Leno, following Emi Martinez's departure to Aston Villa last week.

His contract runs until 2024. Runarsson will wear number 13 at Arsenal, previously owned by David Ospina.

Upon securing the transfer, our technical director Edu said: "We’re very pleased to welcome Alex to our squad. We have been monitoring him for some time and from the analysis, he has strong attributes that we look for in a goalkeeper and as a person."

While Mikel Arteta added: "We want to create healthy competition for places and we look forward to seeing Alex bring further depth to the goalkeeping position."

Mikel Arteta previously spoke about Arsenal potentially signing 2 new goalkeepers, not just one, which means there are several possible scenarios here.

The first one will see Runarsson as a direct back-up to Bernd Leno - if Matt Macey, whose contract expires next summer, sticks around. The second can actually see Runarsson become third-choice (if Macey leaves) and someone like David Raya brought in. We won't have to wait long to find out.
