'I know the club was in big trouble': throwback to Nwankwo Kanu's act of kindness towards Portsmouth - worth around £3m

Back in 2012 when Nwankwo Kanu left Portsmouth after 6 years with the club there were rumours he filed a lawsuit against Pompey, who owed him roughly £3m in wages.

It looked wrong, it sounded wrong and the striker confirmed a year later it was indeed wrong: "I can reveal the story that has been around since I left Portsmouth. I did not ask the club for millions of pounds, I dropped the whole matter of wage money because I know the club was in big problems," Kanu was quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.

The former Arsenal man represented Pompey between 2006 and 2012 and scored the winning goal in the 2008 FA Cup final vs Cardiff. He can actually be considered almost as big a legend by Portsmouth fans as he is by the Gunners: Kanu made just 28 fewer appearances for Pompey than he did for Arsenal.

As for the Pompey themselves, they club never really recovered from PL relegation in 2010. They have dropped down to League One in 2012 and have been there ever since. Still, a worthy gesture from Kanu back in the days not to pile any more misery on his former club - even at his own loss.
