'It is true there were contacts': Levante keeper Fernandez reveals Arsenal wanted him to replace Martinez

"It is clear that there were many things. But in the end the club gave me calmness that they wanted me to stay here and I wanted to stay here", Levante keeper Aitor Fernandez told AS as quoted by Inside Futbol.

"Yes, it is true there were contacts [with Arsenal and Athletic Bilbao]. There were quite a few clubs that asked and it is true that those two are true, but here I am very happy, I am and I hope to be."

The Gunners needed a back-up keeper to replace Emi Martinez. Arsenal went for Alex Runarsson, landing the Icelandic goalie from Dijon.

Runarsson was chosen because of his on-the-ball skills after goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana recommended him. David Raya of Brentford also was on the Gunners' radar.

Last season, Fernandes conceded 51 goals in 36 La Liga goals for Levante, keeping 5 clean sheets.
