'Martin was super ready for that': Odegaard appointed Norway captain

New Norway manager Stale Solbakken has made Martin Odegaard a team captain, taking over from Stefan Johansen.

"There are some players who grow up with it, while other feel it as an extra burden weighing on them," Solbakken told VG of mentality needed to take up the armband. "Martin was super ready for that.

"He was chosen by me after a review with the staff and the coaches, and then it was a feeling I had after conversations with the players.

"We think that Martin has had a long career in top European football already."

Martin has now made 9 appearances for the Gunners since joining Arsenal on loan in January. Earlier this week, he scored his debut goal for Arsenal in the 3-1 victory against Olympiacos in the Europa League.

Odegaard has earned 25 caps for Norway, playing his first game for the senior side in 2014 when he was only 15 years old.

He has been called up to the squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Gibraltar, Turkey and Montenegro.

Back in February, Mikel Arteta praised the 22-year-old's mentality, calling him a 'young leader'.
