"I give you an example, Ben White. He was the best player this year [in the Championship], if not best, top five. For me the best. Now he’s in the England squad," Leeds director Victor Orta told the The Phil Hay Show back in 2020, as quoted by Leeds Live.
"Ben White hadn't played one game in the Championship before [joining Leeds].
"The loan at Newport was really good and when we start to monitor because we were watching, to be honest, I feel impressed.
"I remember in the first moment Sergio Ramos said 'Who is this kid? Playing in the [defensive] line of Newport'. And he was really impressed."
White spent the 2017–18 season away on loan at League Two side Newport County. He is currently at Brighton and is wanted by Arsenal after an impressive debut season in the Premier League.
A compliment from Ramos means a lot as he knows a thing or two about defending.
We struggle to imagine Ramos, a Real Madrid and Spain legend, watching League Two games and picking the then-21-year-old White for praise though.
