'Let's see if VAR does it against a top team': Antonio Conte all but names Spurs small team after what happened in CL

Tottenham played out a 1–1 draw against Sporting in the Champions League at home on Wednesday.

Spurs thought they had qualified for the Round of 16 when Harry Kane scored in the '90+6th minute but VAR decided to intervene.

Spurs manager Antonio Conte went full 'Conte mode' after the game, openly lambasting the decision before walking out his post-match press conference.

The Italian said: "This decision creates a big damage. I think the club has to be strong. I repeat that this situation creates a big damage. I would like to see if you can take this type of decision with a top team in an important game.

"I would like to see if VAR is so brave to take this decision. I'm sorry but I'm really upset because you can assess the situation. I don't see honesty in this type of situation. When I don't see this, I become really upset."

Take a look at the episode Conte was so mad about. Emerson passes the ball back to Kane who then puts it into the net before VAR calls for offside.

Many — including Conte — were confused by why it was an offside given that Emerson passes backwards, not towards the goal.

However, the direction in which the ball moves doesn't matter — what matters is that Kane is ahead of the ball when the pass is made.

And since there are no Sporting players ahead bar the goalkeeper, that's an offside. There's also a deflection off a Sporting player but it's accidental. Again, that's an offside.

Tottenham must now avoid defeat against Ligue 1 side Marseille away from home next week in order to progress to the Round of 16.
