 “Playing for Brazil is the one. To get a cap for Brazil, especially as a forward, you know straight away, you’re one of the elite players in the world.

“The only one which was a surprise for me – not a (huge) surprise cos I love him, is Martinelli.

“I think that one there, they’re bringing him, but especially because they’ve got eight other forwards, I don’t think he’ll play much but the next tournament, he could be the star. Neymar’s getting on a bit.”

Speaking recently with Tc, he said: “I went to La Masia in Barcelona. I practised with Ansu Fati when I went there. We became friends and I stayed there for 15 days.

"Then it didn't work out either, they didn't want me. But four or five months later Arsenal signed me.

"My path was at Arsenal. It wasn’t supposed to be elsewhere & thank God it didn’t work out & I came to Arsenal.”

Martinelli joined Arsenal in 2019 and has made over 70 appearances since then. This season, he started in every Premier League game – scoring five times and providing two assists – helping push the Gunners to the top of the division.

The 21-year-old was rewarded for his fine form with a place in Brazil's squad to the World Cup in Qatar.

'They never said they wanted me': How Martinelli spent years on trial at Man United only to sign for Arsenal

Gabriel Martinelli joined Arsenal from the Brazilian fourth-tier team Ituano in 2019. But prior to that, he had four trials at Man United.

Speaking to The Athletic earlier this year, he recalled it: "My agent said we need to take a decision [on my future]. When he said Arsenal, I said, 'okay, you do not need to say anything else, we are going to London.

"My dad and I had watched the Premier League together, all the teams, like Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal and Leicester.  I actually had four different trials at United when I was 13, 14, 15 and 16.

"This was in Manchester at the club’s training base... I met first-team players like Zlatan [Ibrahimovic], Paul Pogba, Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra.  There was never a moment, though, when they said they wanted me there. But it gave me a taste and made the adaptation a little easier because I had experienced football in England.

"Even after those trials, I always believed in myself. My mind is always thinking, 'I can do it'."

Martinelli ultimately signed for Arsenal in 2019 having caught the eye at Brazilian outfit Ituano. He has become an important part of

's team  this season, scoring four goals and assisting two.

Arsenal pulled off a transfer coup in the summer by signing Brazilian striker Gabriel Martinelli in. Before that, the 18-year-old had had a chance to end up at Man United as he'd even been there and spoken to Paul Pogba.

"There was a project between Ituano [his former club] and Manchester United, and they always took a player," Martinelli recalls while speaking to DAZN. "And I always came for these trips.

"I could neither speak English nor French, but he [Pogba] said 'tudo bem' (a common Portuguese greeting) and took the picture with me nicely, he was super humble."

Don't be surprised here. The Frenchman speaks English, French, Italian, Spanish, as he can also dabble in Portuguese.

Arsenal paid £6m for Martinelli to Ituano, a club from Brazil's fourth tier. The youngster is already one of their best players right now.

"I remember we played against Guarani, we won 2-1, and my agent called me," Martinelli remembers leaving Brazil. "He said 'you have to decide, so what?'. Then he said it was Arsenal. Then you think, one of the best clubs in Europe. I said yes, I couldn’t refuse."

This season, Martinelli has scored 8 goals and made 3 assists in 16 games in all competitions. It takes him 101 minutes on average to score a goal.

I'm confident gabbi will get  game time.Brazil imo will be in the finals & as we all know referee's & bookings are so harsh,totally different from what the Premier league is like so managers will have to rotate & rest players.
Every world Cup brings a NEW young messi/Ronaldo/Ronaldinho to the games & our Gabriel martinelli might just be that player.
That time Micheal Owen destroyed Argentina & scored on his own.
